Every day in 2026, we hear the same kind of story: a girl goes missing and is later found dead. The victim could be a five-year-old child, an elderly woman, or a young girl. This is not simply a bad year. It has been happening for years. The only difference now is how frequently these stories occur.

Ayat Noor was five years old when she disappeared in Haripur. She was found dead 15 days later. Police said CCTV footage was used to identify the suspects. Might her life have been saved if the investigation had progressed more quickly? Why does a missing child have to die before the system is prepared to act urgently?

There were other cases before Ayat Noor: Hina Javed, a little girl; a young disabled woman who was raped inside a police station that was supposed to be a place of safety for victims; and other girls whose cases have become part of the same distressing pattern.

Who is to be held responsible? Are parents to be blamed every time, or the state, which continues to hear such cases without making meaningful changes?

The same excuse is then given: “He was mentally unstable.”

The discussion should not end there. If a person is genuinely dangerous because of a mental disorder or serious behavioural problem, the response should involve proper assessment, treatment and, where the law permits, protective measures.

Other countries have established systems to deal with such cases. In the United States, certain dangerous offenders may, subject to legal criteria, be civilly committed after serving their prison sentences if they continue to pose a danger because of a qualifying mental abnormality. Germany also provides for Sicherungsverwahrung, or preventive detention, for certain offenders who continue to pose a serious danger to society, including some convicted of serious sexual offences. The emphasis is not simply on describing someone as unstable, but on determining whether they remain a danger.

In a state such as Pakistan, however, these incidents have become disturbingly routine: someone goes missing and is later found dead, sometimes after being raped. The dogs of the elite can be found within hours, yet ordinary citizens often cannot be found alive.

It is impossible for parents to watch their children every moment, so the burden cannot be placed solely on families. A state safeguards its children through effective police investigations, a functioning judicial system, proper risk assessments and laws that are actually enforced.

Our daughters, sisters, mothers and children have the right to safety.

Girls have an equal right to live safely. However, many girls in Pakistan are subjected to extreme violence and abuse. Statistics paint a bleak picture. In 2025 alone, 3,630 child abuse cases were reported, including 2,003 cases of sexual abuse, while many others went unreported due to shame or fear. It is estimated that eight cases of abuse occur every day in the country. As a result, female participation in education and the workforce has been significantly affected.

I urge the government to take strict action against child abuse and violence by strengthening child protection laws, making schools and public places safer, and ensuring swift justice for victims. To build a sustainable society, Pakistan must count its girls in.

Jenin, Palestinian Territories: The Israeli military said it struck and killed three militants on Friday in the occupied West Bank, a rare airstrike in the Palestinian territory that has seen growing tension.

The West Bank, a partly semi-autonomous territory home to the Palestinian Authority, has seen soaring violence by Israeli settlers but has recently avoided Israeli military strikes that have devastated the Gaza Strip since the October 7, 2023 attacks.

Military raids on Palestinian towns in the West Bank are common, but Israeli strikes have been rare since the start of 2025.

AFP photos showed Israeli soldiers on Friday removing a body from a house under construction on the outskirts of the northern West Bank city of Jenin.

“Three eliminated in the Jenin area,” the Israeli military said, naming one as Qais Bitawi, whom it described as a Hamas operative in a dismantled Jenin militant network.

The Palestinian health ministry said it had been informed of the death of three men in their 20s, including 22-year-old Bitawi, after they were “targeted by a drone” in Jenin, adding that their bodies were being withheld.

The military said Bitawi had been involved in advancing militant activity “including directing, funding and executing… attacks against Israeli civilians and the security forces”.

It added that he had “maintained ties with Hamas in the Gaza Strip and with Hamas operatives abroad”.

Friday’s airstrike also killed two of his accomplices, the military said, adding that weapons had been found in their vehicle.

In a statement, Hamas denounced the strike and said it “will be met only with further anger and confrontation”.

Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, said Bitawi was one of its commanders, adding he was killed “following a cowardly assassination operation… alongside his fellow martyrs”.

The armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, however, said in a statement that Bitawi and the two others killed were its fighters.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz both congratulated Israel’s forces on the operation.

The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that Israeli forces had briefly detained its crews after they arrived at the site of the attack, confiscating their medical equipment and ordering them to leave without evacuating any patients.

The military said the Jenin network was dismantled during operation “Iron Wall” — a large-scale campaign launched in early 2025 targeting refugee camps in the northern West Bank, which the military said aimed to crack down on Palestinian armed groups.

As part of the operation, Israeli tanks deployed in Jenin, which is known as a hotbed of Palestinian militancy.

The operation has caused the displacement of nearly 40,000 people from the camps, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.

Since the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, at least 1,100 Palestinians in the West Bank, including several armed fighters, have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers, according to an AFP tally based on Palestinian Authority data.

Official Israeli data shows at least 48 Israelis — civilians and soldiers — have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations in the same period.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967. The Oslo Accords in the 1990s granted limited self-rule to the Palestinian Authority, whose ruling Fatah movement is a rival to Hamas.
