Respect Our Polio Workers

0

Polio workers play a vital role in our society. They work day and night to protect children from the dangerous disease. They visit homes, schools and villages to ensure that every child receives polio drops. Because of their efforts, millions of children have been protected and many countries have become free from polio.

Unfortunately, the job of a polio worker is not easy. Many work in difficult and dangerous areas, and some have even lost their lives while performing their duties. They are not harming anyone; they are trying to protect innocent children. Attacking these workers is a grave injustice and must never be tolerated.

The government should provide better security so polio workers can do their jobs without fear. Parents should also co-operate with them and ensure their children receive the vaccine on time. Every citizen should respect these brave workers and appreciate their efforts.

A healthy nation depends on healthy children. By supporting polio workers, we can help make Pakistan completely free from polio. Let us stand together to protect them and build a safer, healthier future for every child.

Smokeless Tobacco

0

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities and the public to the alarming increase in the use of gutka, mainpuri (often called JM), naswar and other harmful chewing products across Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan.

These products remain widely available despite their well-known health risks. It is increasingly common to see young people using them in markets, schools, bus stands and other public places. More worrying still, there are occasions when those responsible for enforcing the law are themselves seen using these products while on duty. Such behaviour undermines public confidence and sends the wrong message. Law-enforcement personnel should lead by example and help discourage the sale and public use of these harmful substances.

Medical research has consistently linked smokeless tobacco products such as gutka and naswar to serious health problems, including oral and throat cancers, gum disease, tooth loss, heart disease and nicotine addiction. Pakistan records around 16,000 new oral cancer cases each year, and studies have identified smokeless tobacco as a major contributing factor. Research has also found that users of products such as naswar face a significantly higher risk of developing oral cancer than non-users.

Beyond health concerns, these products create social and environmental problems. Users frequently spit on roads, walls and footpaths, creating unhygienic surroundings and damaging the appearance of our towns and cities. Their growing popularity among teenagers is particularly alarming, as addiction at a young age can have lifelong consequences.

The government has taken action against certain smokeless tobacco products in the past, but stronger enforcement is still needed. Strict action should be taken against illegal manufacturing and sales, as well as public consumption where prohibited. At the same time, awareness campaigns in schools, colleges and communities can educate young people about the serious risks associated with these products.

Protecting public health is a shared responsibility. By enforcing existing laws effectively and promoting awareness, we can prevent avoidable illness and encourage a healthier future for our nation.

MUHAMMAD NASEER,

Turbat.
