Pakistan unveil squad for FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026

0

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has announced a 20-member squad for the upcoming FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026, with newly-appointed captain Abu Bakar Mahmood set to lead the national side at the prestigious tournament in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The World Cup will run from August 15 to 30, with Pakistan returning to the global showpiece after securing qualification earlier this year through a runners-up finish at the World Cup qualifiers.

The squad combines experienced campaigners with emerging talent as Pakistan looks to make an impact on its return to hockey’s biggest stage.

The announcement comes just days after the PHF made a major leadership change by replacing long-serving captain Ammad Butt with experienced forward Abu Bakar Mahmood.

Ammad had captained Pakistan for 14 years and played a pivotal role in guiding the team to its first World Cup qualification since 2018. Despite relinquishing the captaincy, he retains his place in the national squad for the tournament.

The 20-member squad includes goalkeepers Waqar and Ali Raza, alongside Muhammad Abdullah, Muhammad Sufyan Khan, Moeen Shakeel, Abdul Waheed Ashraf Rana, Abdul Hanan Shahid, Zakaria Hayat, Arshad Liaqat, Adil Latif, Ahmed Nadeem, Ghazanfar Ali, Ammad Shakeel Butt, Muhammad Hamaduddin Anjum, Rehman Abdul, Afraz, Umar Mustafa, Abdul Matan and Muhammad Imad.

The team’s support staff will be headed by Team Manager Muhammad Owais Qarni, while Dutch coach Bob Johan Veldhof will serve as head coach. He will be assisted by Christopher John Bowen of Great Britain and Adnan Zakir, with Ashraf Sultan taking charge as video technician.

PHF President Mohiuddin Ahmad Wani expressed confidence in the selected squad and wished the players and coaching staff success ahead of the tournament.

He also called on hockey fans across the country to throw their support behind the national team as Pakistan seeks to restore its status among the world’s elite hockey nations.

Pakistan will begin its World Cup campaign against England on the opening day of the tournament before facing Wales on August 17. The Green Shirts will then take on arch-rivals India in their final Pool D fixture on August 19, with hopes of securing a place in the knockout stage.

Filing Season Disruptions

0

It has become an unfortunate routine that whenever the income tax return filing season begins, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) introduces changes to the IRIS portal, return forms or filing procedures. Instead of implementing these updates well before the filing period, they are made when taxpayers are ready to submit their returns, leading to technical issues, delays and unnecessary frustration.

This year is no exception. With July almost over, thousands of taxpayers and tax practitioners remain unable to file their returns because the system is still incomplete or undergoing modifications. Valuable time has been lost while the filing deadline continues to approach.

The FBR should provide a stable, fully tested and functional system at the start of every filing season. Any upgrades or procedural changes should be completed months in advance to ensure taxpayers can fulfil their obligations without avoidable obstacles.

I urge the FBR to improve its planning, complete all technical updates before the filing season begins and, if necessary, extend the filing deadline to compensate for time lost due to system-related delays.

A more efficient and taxpayer-friendly approach would improve compliance and strengthen public confidence in the tax system.

South Asia’s Youth

0

In recent years, South Asia has witnessed a series of youth-led movements demanding accountability and reform. Sri Lanka saw mass protests against the government’s handling of the economic crisis that led to sovereign default. In Bangladesh, demonstrations over the quota system evolved into a broader campaign for political accountability. Nepal has experienced growing youth participation in politics, while in India, nationwide protests over the alleged leakage of the NEET medical entrance examination raised serious concerns about transparency and merit.

Pakistan is also witnessing increasing youth discontent. Young activists associated with the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) and the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) continue to protest over their grievances. In Sindh, students have staged hunger strikes against alleged irregularities in the Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) examination results. Lawyers have also challenged recent constitutional amendments, while protests over governance and public policy continue in different parts of the country.

The common thread across South Asia is that young people are demanding greater transparency, justice, accountability and equal opportunities. Governments should respond through dialogue and meaningful institutional reforms rather than allowing frustration to deepen.

Pakistan’s youth are its greatest demographic strength. Ignoring their aspirations will only fuel disillusionment, while empowering them can help build a more inclusive, stable and prosperous future.

Hulu official renewals: The Artful Dodger confirmed for thrilling final season

0

Fans of the hit period drama series The Artful Dodger are preparing for a dramatic conclusion as Hulu officially renews the critically acclaimed show for its second and final season. Serving as a colorful, action-packed continuation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel Oliver Twist, the Australian original series gained a massive international fanbase following its breakout debut.

Streaming executives confirmed that the upcoming installment will serve as the definitive final chapter, giving the creative team behind the series the opportunity to craft a high-stakes, satisfying narrative conclusion for the beloved characters and their intricate storylines.

Set in 1850s Australia, the show follows the adult life of Jack Dawkins, famously known as the Artful Dodger, who has transitioned from a notorious London pickpocket into a skilled surgeon in the colony of Port Victory.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster returns to headline the cast as Dawkins, alongside David Thewlis as his former criminal mentor, Fagin, and Maia Mitchell as the ambitious Lady Belle Fox.

Season two promises to plunge the trio deeper into a web of crime, romance, and medical drama as Dawkins fights to protect his newfound respectability while grappling with his lingering criminal instincts and complicated loyalties.

Production on the final season is slated to begin in Australia later this year, with Disney distribution bringing the series to global streaming audiences across Hulu and Disney+. Showrunners expressed immense gratitude for the overwhelming global reception, promising that the concluding episodes will deliver the perfect blend of sharp humor, intense medical stakes, and thrilling heist sequences that defined the first season.

As the countdown to the final chapter begins, audience excitement remains exceptionally high for what promises to be an epic final curtain call for Charles Dickens’ iconic characters.

AJK elections: PPP, IPP ahead in two Muzaffarabad constituencies

0

ISLAMABAD/ MUZAFFARABAD: The PPP and Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP) appeared set to win the two constituencies in Muzaffarabad division where polling had been postponed due to landslides and bad weather.

Voting was held in LA-27 Muzaffarabad-I (Kotla) and at 71 of the 174 polling stations in LA-28 Muzaffarabad-II (Lachhrat) after authorities delayed the exercise due to blocked roads.

According to unofficial results, PPP’s Syed Bazil Ali Naqvi retained LA-28 (Lachhrat), defeating Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Chaudhry Shahzad Mehmood.

Polling was held at 122 of the constituency’s 174 polling stations on Sunday. However, following allegations that PPP workers had taken away ballot boxes, the Election Commission ordered repolling at two of those stations, along with polling at the remaining 52 stations where voting could not be held earlier.

Results from the remaining 120 polling stations had put Naqvi ahead of his rival by just five votes.

Meanwhile, polling was held at all 197 polling stations in LA-27 (Kutla), where voting had been postponed entirely until Tuesday.

According to preliminary and unofficial results from 115 polling stations, IPP’s Sardar Tabarak Ali was leading with 15,770 votes, followed by PML-N’s Noreen Arif with 12,800 votes and PPP’s Sardar Javed Ayoub with 9,880 votes.

Naqvi’s victory took the PPP’s tally in the Muzaffarabad division to four seats, bringing it level with the PML-N’s strength in the division. Ali, meanwhile, was set to secure the first Assembly seat for the nascent IPP, whose regional president, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, had polled just 3,300 votes from Upper Neelum.

Elections in AJK are being held in three phases due to security concerns, with polling having been held on seven seats of Muzaffarabad division and 12 refugee seats — reserved seats for refugees from India-occupied Kashmir — on Sunday. In the third phase, elections will be held in 11 constituencies of Poonch division on August 10.

The first phase of polling was held in AJK’s Mirpur division on July 27, in which the PML-N had secured nine of the 13 seats while the PPP won the remaining four.

The two parties, which are allies in Centre, have been engaged in a war of words since, with the PPP accusing the PML-N of rigging, violence and electoral malpractices.

Rigging allegations

It levelled the same allegations on Tuesday, with the party posting a complaint on its X account that it said it had sent to the Election Commission.

It claimed that polling staff had been “caught red-handed with official ballot papers and polling bags inside the house of a PML-N supporter, approximately two kilometres from the designated polling site” in LA-27 Muzaffarabad-I (Kotla) in union council Bheri.

The PPP claimed it had “concrete evidence” that polling staff at polling station no.3 had moved to the residence of a PML-N candidate and abandoned their post.

It also shared a statement by PPP Vice President Sherry Rehman on X, with her saying that and the reports of the presence of polling staff at a PML-N supporter’s residence were concerning.

She said videos related to “rigging by the PML-N” had been handed over to the Election Commission as evidence and demanded immediate disciplinary and legal action.

When Dawn asked Election Commission official Khawaja Muhammed Ahsan about the videos, he said a PPP worker had shared some videos, but “they are vague and amount to a little more than unverified allegations”.

“Unless the footage is authenticated through proper forensic examination and corroborated by other credible evidence, it cannot be treated as proof,” he added.

Meanwhile, the PPP shared another complaint addressed to the Election Commission on X. It accused the PML-N of ballot stuffing at polling stations no.95 and no.97 in LA-28 and of obstructing the polling process by barring voters from casting their votes.

The PPP also alleged that at polling station no.92 in LA-27, the presiding officer was stuffing ballots and called for him to be replaced by someone “neutral”.

In yet another complaint, the PPP accused PML-N workers of firing in Bandi in LA-28 to “terrorise the residents of Bandi and keep them inside their homes so that they do not proceed to the polling stations”.

Later in the evening, the PPP Azad Kashmir election cell also submitted video evidence of alleged fake voting at polling station No. 92 in the Municipal Committee Pateeka area, in constituency LA-27 Muzaffarabad-1 (Kotla), to the election commission and demanded immediate action.

In a complaint filed by PPP election cell incharge Javed Ayub, the party alleged that the polling station had been turned into a “factory for fake votes”, claiming that PML-N workers openly cast fake votes throughout the day.

It further alleged that the presiding officer failed to perform his duties and that ballot papers were stamped in his absence. The PPP said it had submitted video evidence and other material to the election commission and called for action against those responsible for alleged violations of electoral laws.

Tallal Chaudhry tells Bilawal to ’show grace in defeat’

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Interior and PML-N’s election coordinator for Poonch division, Tallal Chaudhry, rejected earlier allegations of rigging made by PPP in the AJK elections and took a swipe at PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, saying “leaders should not cry over defeat”, according to a statement issued by the interior ministry.

Presiding over a review meeting on the third phase of AJK elections in Poonch division, Chaudhry said PML-N’s sweeping victory in the first two phases was a reflection of public trust in the performance of the federal and Punjab governments.

“The people of Kashmir have voted for work and performance,” he told district constituency coordinators and PML-N candidates from Poonch division who attended the meeting.

Seemingly responding to PPP’s allegations related to electoral malpractices, the minister said: “Bilawal Bhutto should show a big heart. Leaders do not look good when they cry over defeat.”

He added that the mandate given to PML-N in AJK showed that “every part of Pakistan wants to become like Punjab” in terms of development and governance.

He expressed confidence that the PML-N would secure a majority of seats in the third phase of the AJK elections.

A day earlier, Bilawal had warned the PML-N that a “countdown” for it had begun and declared that his party’s “movement” for people’s rights would extend to the entire country.

In a series of clips posted on X on Monday, Bilawal affirmed that his party’s struggle for the people’s right to governance, ownership and employment will continue.

The PPP chairman said, “And my message for the friends in PML-N is just this: you can hear that voice, listen carefully, tick tock, tick tock. Your countdown has begun.”

Bilawal had given a similar warning last week to the federal government, which is led by the PML-N in alliance with his own PPP.

Senior leaders of his party have made similar remarks in recent days, even alleging the PML-N of rigging in the 2024 general elections, which resulted in both parties being part of the current ruling coalition in the Centre. Both parties have also traded barbs over governance, political mandate and provincial performance.

Kuwait issues alert for citizens and expats

The Ministry of Justice and the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI) in Kuwait have urged citizens and expatriates to activate their approved digital signatures to access a growing range of government and banking services securely.

In a joint statement, the two authorities said the initiative is part of ongoing cooperation between government entities to simplify procedures and improve digital services for individuals.

The digital signature allows users to sign documents and approve transactions electronically using their devices, removing the need for paper documents or in-person visits. Officials said the service has full legal validity under Kuwait’s applicable laws and regulations.

Authorities said the digital signature will support several upcoming Ministry of Justice services, including online notarization and the digital issuance and cancellation of powers of attorney.

It will also enable users to complete a range of other transactions remotely, such as setting up companies and institutions, processing commercial licenses through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and carrying out selected banking transactions and contractual agreements.

Kuwaitis can activate their digital signature through the “My Kuwait ID” application or self-service machines, while expats can complete activation through designated self-service devices available at several locations across Kuwait

The Ministry of Justice and PACI encouraged everyone to activate the digital signature in advance to benefit from current and future digital government and banking services with greater convenience and security.
