Exhumation of Mir Raza Ali's body postponed after family objects to abrupt reconstitution of medico-legal board

0

KARACHI: The exhumation of 25-year-old businessman and Institute of Business Administration graduate Mir Raza Ali’s body was postponed on Friday after his family objected to the abrupt reconstitution of the medico-legal board.

Ali’s body was found in bushes in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar last month, a day after he went missing on July 28. While his family is convinced that he was kidnapped, tortured and murdered, investigators probing the incident continue to build their case around the possibility that he died by suicide.

His family was present at the cemetery adjacent to Tariq Road’s Rehmania Masjid for the exhumation on Friday. But, the exhumation was deferred, with the counsel for Ali’s family, Jibran Nasir, telling the media that they had informed the investigating officer that the family had rejected the reconstituted board and would not accept an exhumation by it “under any circumstances”.

Standing alongside Ali’s father, Mir Hussain Ali Khan, Nasir accused the authorities of trying to bury the facts and held the police, health ministry and the Sindh government responsible for the delay.

The family could not allow the examination to be performed by members whose “qualifications and intentions were under question”, he added.

Nasir claimed the backdated notification for the reconstitution of the board was issued by the Hyderabad health director general at around 10am on Friday. “And under media pressure and after a press conference this morning, he now says that more members may be added [to the board], but the four chosen by him should also remain a part of it,” Nasir alleged.

He added that they still had not been informed why the original board was reconstituted.

Moreover, he continued, now there was another notification that authorised the Hyderabad health director general to form the medico-legal board, a power that previously rested with the Sindh health secretary.

The authorities “needed to be given a lesson on law” as under the Sindh Medicolegal Act 2023, only a police surgeon had the complete authority in matters of exhumation, he said, adding that the act was a special law that prevailed over general laws.

The lawyer said they would not be making any demands to the police. Ali’s father was now directly raising questions to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, he said.

“We will also not turn to the Sindh inspector general of police (IG). What do you ask an IG who claims that the investigation has been completed even before the exhumation and medical examination?”

He reasserted that they only trusted the original eight-member board, adding, “Sindh government, they were hired by you. And if they are not competent enough, then how were they appointed in the first place?”

Nasir alleged that police were presenting the CCTV evidence “selectively” and demanded that all facts of the case be brought to light.

He said CCTV footage shared showed a motorcycle and a trash picker passing by the body. But then, why did it not show the moment when Ali walked up to the place where his body was found, if he died by suicide, Nasir questioned.

“Where did that footage go?”

He added, “Why is it that people at the nearby guesthouse panicked and ran to a nearby property when Ali’s father inquired about him? […] And why were they not tracked?”

Nasir further accused police of not letting Ali’s father see the complete CCTV footage.

Concluding his talk, he said, “If not today, then maybe we will get the exhumation done tomorrow. We will try our best that the originally nominated doctors perform the examination, and I am sure the facts that they are going to such great lengths to bury will surface.”

Earlier, he had also alleged on X that the Sindh government had “maliciously” changed the members of the board without any explanation.

“The family expresses no consent for this new board and will not allow it to exhumate the body tomorrow morning and corrupt whatever evidence remains and it will be formally communicated to authorities,” he said, adding that the fresh notification would be challenged at the appropriate forum.

Reconstitution of board

On Thursday, a Karachi court allowed the exhumation of Ali’s body on an application filed by Ali’s father, directing the police surgeon and the Sindh health secretary to constitute a medico-legal board for the exhumation of Ali’s body “at the earliest possible date and time”.

The court ruling came after a controversy emerged between the Karachi police surgeon and investigators over alleged loopholes in the medico-legal report regarding the post-mortem examination.

The Sindh health department then constituted the eight-member board, with Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed as the convener. Prof Dr Naseem Ahmed of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Dr Farah Waseem of Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Amir Hassan Khan of Citizens Police Liaison Committee, Additional Police Surgeon Dr Sirichand, Dr Kamran Khan and Dr Daniyal Mirza of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and Dr Mohammed Yaseen, the admin in-charge of the police surgeon office, were the other members of the board.

However, a new order has been issued by the Sindh health directorate general. The notification, a copy of which is available with Dawn, said that the board had been reconstituted to conduct the exhumation and medico-legal examination of the deceased.

While Dr Syed remained the convener of the new board, its members were changed to Prof Dr Zakiuddin from DUHS, Prof Dr Kazi Akbar and Prof Dr Abid Hussain Chang from Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences and Hyderabad Police Surgeon Dr Waseem Khan.

Controversy over autopsy

Raza, an IBA graduate and the owner of eatery Wafflix, had gone missing on July 28. The 25-year-old’s body was found a day later with a gunshot wound in bushes near Shahi Qila Ground in Gulistan-i-Jauhar.

Initially, on the complaint lodged by his father, a case was registered at the Ferozabad police station under Section 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine a person) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Police maintain that the investigation has revealed that Ali had been facing financial difficulties and had asked his friends for money the night he died.

According to police, he had left his home in PECHS Block-2 and hired a taxi through an app. The taxi driver dropped him a short distance from the spot where his body was found, police said.

The case took a new turn when Karachi Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed told a private news channel on Tuesday that the postmortem findings of Ali’s body had raised several questions, as some observations in the report did not appear to match the available photographs.

She said the reported entry wound, bullet trajectory and exit wound did not correspond with one another. While it was scientifically possible for a bullet to enter through the back and exit from the front, she stressed that her assessment was based only on the postmortem report and photographs, as she had not examined the body herself.

The police surgeon noted that entry wounds were typically smaller than exit wounds in firearm cases. She also said that gunshot residue, commonly found on the hands in suspected suicides, was not tested for in this case.

Her interview prompted the police authorities to issue a statement, terming such observations as having the potential to adversely affect the ongoing investigation.

The statement, however, said that exhumation of the dead body could be done on the medical board’s recommendation for further clarification by a committee of medico-legal experts with the court’s permission.

‘The Mummy 4’: Fans react to Arnold Vosloo’s return

0

The Mummy 4 fans are also excited that the franchise will return with the original cast. Fans on social media immediately began campaigning for Arnold Vosloo’s return.

In an interview with Deadline, Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O’Connor will return for The Mummy. The film already cast Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in their original roles. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence will direct the sequel. Universal Pictures plans to release the movie in theaters on October 15, 2027.

Fehr starred as Ardeth in The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001) but was absent from The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). Maria Bello replaced Weisz in the third film.

Fehr originally played Ardeth Bay, a warrior guarding against ancient evils in the desert. O’Connor played Beni Gabor, a cowardly treasure hunter who died in the first film. Beni’s fate seemed sealed after scarab beetles trapped him inside an ancient tomb. The franchise deals heavily with resurrection, however, making his return plausible within the story.

Fans on social media immediately began campaigning for Arnold Vosloo’s return as Imhotep. One user wrote, “I understand Oded and don’t mind, but if Kevin is returning, then bring back Arnold Vosloo as well.” Another user asked directly, “Arnold Vosloo and Patricia Velasquez next, right?” Several fans expressed surprise at O’Connor’s casting given Beni’s on-screen death.

One user noted that O’Connor’s return strongly suggested Vosloo will also join the cast. “So this definitely confirmed Imhotep is returning since John Hannah said Kevin and Arnold Vosloo are in talks,” they wrote. Another user speculated that O’Connor might play a different creature role instead of Beni. They also added that Beni’s resurrection fits naturally within the franchise’s established rules.

The confirmed cast also includes John Hannah as Evelyn’s brother Jonathan and newcomer Michael Johnston. Numan Acar joins the franchise as a new addition alongside the returning cast members. The sequel will ignore the events of 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor entirely.

A pair of the most popular supporting characters from The Mummy are set to reprise their roles for The Mummy 4. Brendan Fraser (Rick O’Connell), Rachel Weisz (Evelyn O’Connell) and John Hannah (Jonathan Carnahan) were confirmed for The Mummy 4 several months ago.

The Mummy 4 just got more interesting with its latest casting update. The upcoming film has added franchise veteran Kevin J. O’Connor to its ensemble. The sequel also brings back Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

Balochistan youth urged to harness AI for national progress

0

ISLAMABAD  –  Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Thursday  urged young people from Balochistan to embrace artificial intelligence (AI), research and continuous learning, saying the country’s future depended on a technologically skilled and well-educated generation.

He was speaking to a delegation of students participating in the five-day Digital Balochistan AI Launchpad Bootcamp, who called on him at Parliament House. Federal Secretary for Inter-Provincial Coordination Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani also attended the meeting.

Welcoming the students, the Speaker recalled his long association with Balochistan, saying he had first visited the province in 1994. He described Balochistan as a strategically important province and said the Reko Diq mining project had the potential to transform Pakistan’s economic future.

He said the National Assembly had launched an internship programme under which students from 21 universities across Pakistan were receiving parliamentary training. He added that efforts were under way to expand internship opportunities for students from Balochistan.

Highlighting the importance of reading and research, Mr Sadiq said that when he was first elected to the National Assembly in 2002, he had limited knowledge of the Constitution and parliamentary procedures. He said he had regularly studied the Constitution of Pakistan and the National Assembly’s Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, enabling him to gain a deeper understanding of parliamentary affairs.

The Speaker said the National Assembly had reserved employment quotas for all provinces and was also providing opportunities for persons with disabilities. He added that efforts were being made to increase women’s representation in the parliamentary workforce to 30 per cent, stressing that equal opportunities for young people were essential for national development. During the meeting, the students were briefed on the National Assembly’s adoption of artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies to modernise parliamentary operations. They were informed that the Assembly had introduced Pakistan’s first AI-enabled parliamentary system to improve legislative processes and administrative efficiency.

The delegation was also briefed on the digitisation of parliamentary business, including the electronic circulation of agendas, bills, reports and other official documents. Members of the National Assembly have also been provided with digital tablets as part of the transition to a paperless parliamentary system, reducing paper consumption while improving efficiency and access to information.

Mr Sadiq said AI was helping strengthen parliamentary research, legislative drafting, post-legislative scrutiny, access to information and administrative functions. However, he emphasised that artificial intelligence should be viewed as a tool to complement rather than replace human intelligence, creativity and decision-making.

Earlier, Tech Valley Pakistan Founder and Chief Executive Officer Umar Farooq briefed the Speaker on the objectives and progress of the Digital Balochistan AI Launchpad Bootcamp.

Commending the initiative, the Speaker praised the Government of Balochistan, Tech Valley Pakistan, the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination, the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, and the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) for promoting AI education and equipping young people with skills needed for the digital economy.
