Is Ivermectin a possible cure for cancer? Here’s what Oncologists say
More cancer patients are getting prescriptions for the antiparasitic drug ivermectin after viral online claims. Oncologists and public health experts warn that there is no scientific evidence supporting ivermectin as a cancer treatment.
A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that prescriptions for ivermectin and similar antiparasitic drugs more than doubled among US cancer patients.
The increase grew after actor Mel Gibson appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. He claimed that three friends with stage 4 cancer went into complete remission after taking ivermectin with fenbendazole, another antiparasitic drug.
The podcast segment was viewed tens of millions of times online, leading to a new wave of unverified claims on social media.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only approves ivermectin for treating certain parasitic infections in people. It is also commonly used as a dewormer for livestock. Medical experts stress that claims about its anti-cancer effects come only from early lab studies in animals and cells, not from proven clinical trials in humans.
Oncologists warn that using ivermectin for unapproved purposes can be very dangerous. Dr. Nitin Verma, an oncologist at Kaiser Permanente, said there is no strong clinical evidence that ivermectin is safe or effective for treating cancer in people.
Experts say the biggest risk is delaying proper treatment. When cancer patients try unproven alternative therapies, they often put off or refuse proven treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, which can make their outlook much worse. Taking high or unmonitored doses of these drugs can also cause serious health problems, such as severe nerve damage and seizures.
Some formal clinical trials are happening, including an early study at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center testing ivermectin with immunotherapy. However, these studies are tightly controlled and have not reached any clear conclusions.
The FDA and the American Cancer Society both advise against using ivermectin to treat cancer. Doctors urge patients not to trust health claims they see online and to talk directly with their oncologists about proven treatments and approved clinical trials.
Islamabad governance overhaul proposes elected assembly, chief executive and greater local autonomy
ISLAMABAD, September 6, 2026: A proposed draft for the formation of the Islamabad Capital Territory Assembly has been submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, ARY News reported.
The draft has been prepared by a high-level committee headed by Federal Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal. According to sources, the committee has proposed establishing the Islamabad assembly through an Act of Parliament instead of a constitutional amendment.
The proposal calls for seven seats for the Islamabad Capital Territory Assembly from each National Assembly constituency, while Islamabad would have its own assembly, chief executive and 27 administrative departments.
Under the proposed draft, 21 assembly members would be directly elected by the people. Five seats would be reserved for women and one for minorities.
The draft proposes bringing health, education, environment and civic services under the local government. It also proposes bringing Islamabad’s fragmented administrative system under a unified structure and restructuring the powers of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and other institutions.
Law and order and master planning would remain under the federal government, while other administrative matters would be transferred to the elected government.
The draft proposes transferring all powers and functions of the CDA to the Islamabad Capital Territory government, while functions of other institutions would be transferred under the Local Government Act 2015.
A chief secretary and four secretaries would be appointed to manage Islamabad’s administrative affairs. The four secretaries would be given responsibilities for different administrative groups and departments.
According to sources, institutions established in Islamabad would work for the entire ICT, while federal institutions established for the whole country would continue their operations in the capital.
The proposed framework also recommends comprehensive and unified legislation for Islamabad’s new administrative system, along with necessary amendments to the CDA Ordinance 1960.
Under the proposal, members of the Islamabad assembly would be subject to Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution. Elections would be held under the Election Commission of Pakistan.
The chief executive of Islamabad would be called either a mayor or chief minister and would be accountable to the elected assembly. The assembly would have provincial-style administrative and financial autonomy.
The federal government would continue to manage law and order and master planning through the relevant ministry or governor.
According to sources, the proposed structure will be approved by the federal cabinet. After approval, legislation will be introduced in the Senate and National Assembly.
The high-level special committee that prepared the draft includes Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Musadik Malik, Rana Sanaullah, Talal Chaudhry, Islamabad’s two members of the National Assembly and the interior secretary.

Security forces killed 21 terrorists in multiple KP operations: ISPR
Security forces killed 21 terrorists in multiple operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from September 3 to 5, military’s media affairs wing said on Sunday.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), 10 more terrorists were killed in North Waziristan following an earlier engagement along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, bringing the total number of terrorists killed by security forces in border-related operations in the area since August 31 to 25.
In another encounter in the district, security forces engaged a group of terrorists moving along the Afghanistan border and killed seven of them.
Four more terrorists were killed in two separate joint operations in Kohat and Dera Ismail Khan districts, the ISPR said.
The military said the repeated incidents along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border highlighted Pakistan’s concerns over the use of Afghan soil for cross-border terrorism.
Sanitization operations are continuing in the affected areas to eliminate any remaining terrorists, while the country’s counter-terrorism campaign under Azm-e-Istehkam will continue with full resolve, the ISPR added.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the security forces for successfully eliminating India-sponsored terrorists in separate KP operations.
The prime minister said the entire nation was proud of the professional capabilities of the armed forces and law enforcement agencies for continuously thwarting nefarious designs aimed at undermining peace and stability in the country.
He said the whole nation stood shoulder to shoulder with the security forces in the ongoing war against terrorism.
