Govt to stop anyone marching on Islamabad ‘in every possible way: Naqvi
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on Friday that the government would stop anyone from marching towards the federal capital “in every possible way,” and warned that contempt of court proceedings would be filed against anyone violating a recent Islamabad High Court (IHC) ruling.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad alongside other officials, Naqvi said the government would not allow anyone to “take law into hands and close federal capital,” and added that “this time, we are clearly communicating the rules of engagement to our personnel.”
His remarks came in response to PTI’s call for nationwide protests on September 27 to demand the release of party founder Imran Khan and to push for what it calls the supremacy of the Constitution.
The press conference followed a terrorist attack earlier in the day at Kohat Police Lines in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in which an explosives-laden vehicle detonated near a mosque inside the police compound before armed attackers attempted to storm the facility.
Officials said seven attackers took part, six of whom were killed during the clearance operation. The attack left 16 people dead, including five police officers, and more than 50 injured.
Referring to the attack, Naqvi turned his attention to KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, telling him: “You may certainly stage protests in your own area, but an attack on any province is unacceptable.”
He said the province should instead be focused on fighting terrorism.
“It does not befit you to carry the coffins of martyrs on one hand and prepare for sit-ins,” he said, adding that after such incidents, it did not suit provincial leaders to call for long marches while also having to bury the dead.
He said the KP chief minister and his cabinet should pursue the eradication of terrorism with the same energy they were putting into organising long marches.
Naqvi also urged opposition leaders to stop “mobilising people, collecting funds and arranging transport” for protests, warning that “if even one life is lost, those responsible will be the organisers who are bringing this group together.”
He said political confrontation at this time would harm both the economy and society.
Separately, KP Inspector General Zulfiqar Hameed said the clearance operation in Kohat would continue “until the complete elimination of Fitna-ul-Khawarij,” adding that police morale remained high. President Asif Ali Zardari said the complete elimination of “foreign-sponsored terrorists” was essential for national security, while Naqvi said the attackers’ “cowardly acts cannot weaken the nation’s resolve.”
Nobel Foundation raises prize money for each award to $1.2 million
COPENHAGEN: Sweden’s Nobel Foundation said on Friday it will increase this year’s prize money for its prestigious annual awards by 9% to a total value of 12 million Swedish crowns ($1.22 million) in each of the six categories.
“By increasing the prize amount, we uphold the long-term significance of the Nobel Prize and ensure that the financial part of the prize retains its value over time,” Hanna Stjarne, executive director of the Nobel Foundation, said in a statement.
Winners of this year’s prizes in physics, chemistry, peacemaking, literature, economics and medicine or physiology will be announced between October 5 and October 12, marking the 125th anniversary of the first awards.

England can build on World Cup ‘spirit’, says Tuchel
Thomas Tuchel said England will build on the “fantastic spirit” of their World Cup campaign as he targets glory on home soil at Euro 2028.
The England boss was speaking at Wembley after naming a 27-man group for a four-game Nations League camp, starting with a clash against world champions Spain on September 26.
It comes just nine weeks after the end of the World Cup, where England conceded two late goals in a painful semi-final defeat by Argentina.
Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and Chelsea forward Cole Palmer were the headline picks after both were controversially overlooked for the World Cup.
Tuchel also included Liverpool’s teenage winger Rio Ngumoha, uncapped Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite in his first squad since the tournament in North America.
A number of players who were in the World Cup squad including John Stones, Djed Spence, Dan Burn, Jordan Henderson and Dean Henderson missed out through injury.
Former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss Tuchel said he did not see the Nations League as a new start, instead focusing on continuity.
“I feel that it’s not a new beginning that we are starting now, so we build on a solid and very valuable foundation, and the target is to win the home Euros,” he told reporters on Friday.
Euro 2028 will be co-hosted by England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.
The German said his side’s ultimate failure at the World Cup had left him unfulfilled but stuck by his squad picks.
“I had a lot of sleepless nights, but I had not one sleepless night about our selection, because I was more than seven weeks with this group of players, and they were nothing but fantastic,” he said.
“I think the spirit that we built and the mentality that we showed brought us to the place that we got.”
Tuchel said Palmer had impressed for Chelsea early in the season.
“He has his numbers back, he has assists back, he has decisive goals back, so that’s why he’s in the squad and I think he has a point to prove,” he said.
“The same goes for Trent. He was never off the list, he was never in a non-selectable class, and he has this chance to show, to be the best version of himself.”
Tuchel said it was his “duty” to play Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo after he failed to feature for a single minute at the World Cup.
The England boss welcomed the challenge of taking on Spain at Wembley.
“We feel the gap is closing and we feel that we are close and we want a proof of point,” he said.
“The stadium is sold out, it will be very exciting, the motivation cannot be higher to play against the world champions.”
England also play the Czech Republic twice and Croatia once during the upcoming international window.
